Bharti Airtel announced on Tuesday (January 25, 2022) that a new 21-megawatt solar power facility in Maharashtra’s Buldhana district has been commissioned as part of the company’s commitment to cut carbon emissions and contribute to global efforts to battle climate change. According to the firm, the solar-powered device will reduce carbon emissions by 25,517 tonnes per year.
According to a statement, Airtel collaborated with Avaada to build the captive power station, which spans 80 acres, to offer renewable energy to the company’s Nxtra data centers and switching centers in Maharashtra.
“For Nxtra by Airtel, sustainability is a top priority. This is another step toward achieving our goal of sourcing more than 50% of our data center’s power needs from renewable energy sources in the next 12 months, as well as contributing to Airtel’s overall GHG emission reduction targets “Rajesh Tapadia, CEO of Nxtra by Airtel, stated.
In Uttar Pradesh, Nxtra by Airtel has already installed two 14-MW captive solar power installations.
With 11 main and 120 edge data centers across India, the firm claims to have India’s largest data center network, and it plans to invest over Rs 5,000 crore over the next four years to triple its capacity. Airtel has pledged to reduce absolute Scope 1 and 2 Green House Gas (GHG) emissions by 50.2 percent throughout its operations by the financial year 2031, using FY 2021 as a baseline. Airtel has vowed to reduce absolute scope 3 GHG emissions by 42 percent in the same timeframe.
