In the first quarter of 2022, India built 2.7 GW of large-scale solar, up 23% from the previous quarter’s 2.2 GW and up 53% year over year from the 1.7 GW installed the previous year.
In the first quarter of the calendar year 2022, India installed nearly 3 GW of solar capacity, up 21% from the previous quarter’s 2.6 GW. Installations increased by 50% year over year (YoY) from the 2 GW installed at the same time last year.
Mercom’s recently issued study, Q1 2022 India Solar Market Update, contains the most recent installation data.
During the reporting period, large-scale solar accounted for 85% of the installations, while rooftop solar accounted for 15%. India now has a total installed solar capacity of 52 GW.
Over 54 GW of utility-scale projects is in the works in India.
During the quarter, India added 4.6 GW of overall power capacity, with solar power accounting for the majority of new installations. During the quarter, solar accounted for 68% of new power capacity, the highest share of new power generation acquired by solar in any quarter.
At the end of March 2022, Rajasthan became the first state to reach 10 GW of cumulative large-scale solar installations. The government owns 24% of the country’s total installations.
Rajasthan and Gujarat led the way in solar installations during the quarter, with 52% and 18%, respectively, followed by Karnataka with 6%.
Projects impacted by the Great Indian Bustard are still shrouded in mystery (GIB). The Supreme Court ruled that transmission lines running across the GIB’s priority areas must either be underground or have bird diverters installed to preserve the critically endangered species.
A committee has been established to analyze individual cases and provide input to the Supreme Court. This is a lengthy procedure that will most certainly hinder project development this year.
“The only issue preventing 2022 from being another record year for solar installations is the uncertainty surrounding the Great Indian Bustard case in Rajasthan. Everything hinges on the Supreme Court’s decision and how swiftly it is made. “With a little help from the government, India might surpass the 60 GW large-scale solar installation target set for 2022, which would be a huge accomplishment,” Raj Prabhu, CEO of Mercom Capital Group, said.
While 2021 was the most significant year for the Indian solar industry, with over 10 GW of installations, the research predicts that 2022 will be even better.
