India’s solar PV module manufacturing capacity has reached approximately 63 GW, according to the Approved List of Models & Manufacturers (ALMM) published by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy. This update was recently shared in Parliament by Shripad Yesso Naik, Minister of State for New and Renewable Energy.
The government is driving domestic PV module production with initiatives such as the PLI Scheme, domestic content requirements, ‘Make in India’ preferences, and basic customs duty on the import of solar PV cells and modules.
Under the PLI scheme for PV modules, Letters of Award have been granted for establishing 48,337 MW of fully partially integrated solar PV module manufacturing units. By October 31, 2024, approximately INR 35,000 crore had already been invested in projects awarded under this scheme.
For solar waste management, Solar cell and module manufacturers must comply with the E-Waste (Management) Rules, 2022. These rules mandate registration, inventory maintenance, storage of waste from solar PV modules/cells until 2034-35, annual returns filing, adherence to Standard Operating Procedures, and proper processing of non-solar PV module waste according to applicable regulations.
