India has surpassed Japan to become the third-largest generator of solar electricity globally, according to 2024 data released by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA). With a total generation of 108,000+ GWh, India now ranks just behind China and the United States in global solar output, as confirmed by Union Minister Pralhad Joshi.
This significant milestone highlights India’s fast-paced renewable energy transition, driven by ambitious government targets, falling solar costs, and strong industrial demand. In comparison, Japan generated 96,000+ GWh, placing it fourth in the global rankings.
India’s solar growth aligns with its commitment to achieve 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030, with solar playing a leading role. As of mid-2025, India’s installed solar capacity stands at around 116 GW, supported by national policies such as the PLI scheme, open access solar, and increased rooftop adoption.
Experts believe India’s solar momentum will only strengthen, especially with rising energy needs from data centers, EV charging infrastructure, and manufacturing. This development reaffirms India’s position as a global clean energy leader and marks a crucial step in achieving long-term energy security and sustainability goals.
