On 8 October 2025, India crossed a major clean energy milestone: with an installed solar capacity of 125 gigawatts (GW), the nation now ranks as the third-largest solar energy producer in the world. That announcement came from Union Renewable Energy Minister Pralhad Joshi at the curtain-raiser event for the 8th session of the International Solar Alliance (ISA).
India’s solar achievement is not only a numerical feat but reflects a broader shift toward decentralised, inclusive power access. The minister highlighted that over 20 lakh households are already benefitting under the PM Surya Ghar – Muft Bijli Yojana and that the PM-KUSUM scheme is scaling solar pumps and small plants in rural areas to reach the last mile.
In terms of manufacturing strength, India currently has around 100 GW of domestic solar module capacity and 27 GW of cell manufacturing capacity, bolstering energy security and supply chain resilience. Looking ahead, the government is targeting an ambitious 500 GW of non-fossil capacity by 2030, with much of this expected to arise from solar deployment.
India’s solar surge is also strategically timed with the upcoming ISA Assembly (27–30 October 2025 in New Delhi), where global commitments and financing for renewable deployment will be pushed forward. The nation’s journey underscores how a strong policy vision, industrial backing, and innovation in panel tech can combine to transform not just power markets but millions of lives.
