At COP30 in Belém, Brazil, India made a powerful appeal for global cooperation on energy security for Small Island Developing States (SIDS), as part of a High-Level Ministerial Session of the International Solar Alliance (ISA) SIDS Platform. Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav emphasized that solar energy can be a game-changer for island nations that are heavily dependent on expensive fossil fuel imports.
Yadav stressed India’s own clean energy achievements, noting that the country has crossed 500 GW of installed electricity capacity, with more than half coming from non-fossil sources—reaching its climate targets ahead of schedule. He described solar as not just a technology, but a tool of dignity, resilience, and independence for vulnerable island communities.
He highlighted the plans being championed through the ISA SIDS Platform, including blended finance, standardized procurement, capacity building, and digital solar ecosystems. These measures aim to make solar deployment more affordable and robust for SIDS, helping them reduce diesel dependence and build climate resilience.
India’s pitch also drew on grassroots solar success: citing its PM Surya Ghar rooftop solar programme, Yadav noted that over 2 million families now generate clean power from their roofs. He called for collective global action to scale similar models across island nations—underscoring solar energy as a shared pathway to peace, empowerment, and climate justice.
