Highlights:

  • India’s total solar capacity has reached 85,474 MW, and its wind capacity has grown to 46,656 MW.

  • In the first six months of 2024, the country added 12,156 MW of new solar and 1,920 MW of new wind capacity.

India’s solar energy capacity has surpassed 85 GW, according to the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE). With new additions in June this year, India’s total renewable capacity (excluding large hydro) has reached 148 GW.

According to the Ministry’s monthly progress report, India added 1,197 MW of new solar capacity and 237 MW of new wind capacity in June 2024. With these additions, India’s total solar capacity has reached 85,474 MW, and its wind capacity has grown to 46,656 MW.

India’s total installed capacity of solar and wind power now stands at 131 GW, accounting for approximately 88% of the country’s renewable energy capacity (excluding large hydro).

New solar and wind energy additions in the first half of 2024 have outpaced those in 2023, with India adding around 14 GW.

In the first six months of 2024, the country added 12,156 MW of new solar and 1,920 MW of new wind capacity.

If India maintains its current pace, it could add around 30 GW of new solar and wind capacities this year.

Renewable energy expansion is notably concentrated in South India and Western states, with Rajasthan leading in North India. Gujarat stands out nationally with the highest installed capacity of 28,405.9 MW, driven by favorable renewable policies. The state’s rooftop solar capacity of 3,818 MW underscores its leadership in the sector.

However, eastern states like Bihar, Jharkhand, and Chhattisgarh continue to lag in renewable energy growth.
