Ladakh to get a ₹20,000 Transmission Line for Upcoming Solar Project

Highlights:

  • The central government approved the construction of a 713 km transmission line in Ladakh.
  • The line will evacuate power from the upcoming 13 GW solar park cum 12 GW battery storage project in the region.

The Indian government has approved the construction of a 713 km transmission line in Ladakh, which will wheel electricity from the upcoming 13 GW solar project in the region. The line would be built at an investment of ₹20,773 crores and include a link to feed the generated power into the grid in Leh.

The central government will also provide a viability gap funding of ₹8,309 crores (40% of the project cost) to keep the transmission tariff affordable. The power line will transmit high voltage direct current and has been accorded the status of a ‘national project’. It will be built by the state-run utility transmission company ‘Power Grid Corporation of India Limited‘.

The transmission line will have to survive extreme weather conditions that range from 40 degrees Celsius in summer to -40 degrees Celsius in winter.

The solar project is being developed at the Pang plateau, located 174 km away from Leh, along the road to Manali. In 2020, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the construction of a 7.5 GW solar park which was later scaled up to 13 GW. The plant will also boast a 12 GW-hour battery storage capacity.

The project will also be connected to the Leh-Kargil-Alusteng-Srinagar line and provide electricity to Kargil and Jammu & Kashmir.

The massive solar park is expected to create direct and indirect employment for skilled and non-skilled personnel and contribute to India’s ambitious 500 GW renewable energy capacity by 2030 target.
