India’s cumulative installed solar capacity has crossed 70,000 MW, said R.K Singh, Minister of New and Renewable Energy. Moreover, Rajasthan remained in the lead, with over 17.8 GW of installed capacity.
- Rajasthan: 17.8 GW
- Gujarat: 10.13 GW
- Karnataka: 9 GW
- Tamil Nadu: 6.8 GW
- Maharashtra: 4.8 GW
- Telangana: 4.6 GW
- Andhra Pradesh: 4.5 GW
Other notable mentions were Madhya Pradesh, which contributes 3+ GW, Uttar Pradesh with 2.5 GW, Punjab, and Haryana with over 1.1 GW each, Chhattisgarh with 962 MW, and Bihar with 203 MW.
“The country has an estimated solar power potential of 748,990 MW. Hence, the potential of solar energy is not fully tapped, so far. The Government is making efforts to harness the available potential through various schemes and programs,” stated Mr. Singh.
He added that the Indian government introduced multiple schemes and programmes to promote renewable energy, especially solar power. These include permitting Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) of up to 100 percent under automatic route and waiving Inter-State Transmission System (ISTS) charges for the inter-state sale of solar and wind energy projects that are to be commissioned by 30th June 2025.
The government is also laying more transmission lines and creating additional sub-station capacity for RE evacuation under the Green Energy Corridor Scheme. Additionally, a Project Development cell will also be set up for attracting and facilitating investments in this sector.
India is ramping up efforts to achieve its target of developing 280 GW installed solar capacity by 2030. Recently, MNRE announced that the country will have a Module Manufacturing Capacity of 100 GW Per Annum by 2026.
