India’s power demand is rising and in the first week of June 2021, it rose by 12.6%. India’s highest-ever power demand was 185.82 GW in January 2021.

The power consumption of India was 25.36 Billion Units in first week of June 2021. This one weeks consumption is significant when compared to the entires months consumption for June 2020, which was 22.53 Billion Units according to the power ministry as it signifies a recovery in demand for power.
If we compare the power consumption of July 2019 and July 2020, we find that the power consumption of July 2020 was 11% less in comparison to July 2019. The major reason behind this declined in 2020 was the lockdown-imposed because of Covid-19. Many economical zones were shut down, so their power consumption was almost zero. In May 2020, the power consumption of India was 26.24 Billion Units.

Gradually as the Central Government & State Government are easing the lockdowns’ restrictions, many economical zones are reopening again and experts are hoping to see a rise in power demand. June 7th 2021, was recorded with the highest power consumption, which was 168.52 GW. As compared to June 6th 2020, the power consumption was 15% more.

In April 2021, the power consumption was higher than last year by 38.5% , which was just before the second wave of Covid-19 in India. After the State Government imposed a lockdown in 2021, the power consumption declined substantially.

There was an 8.2% growth in May 2021 as compared to May 2020. Peak power demand hit was 168.78 GW in May 2021 as compared to 166.22 GW in May 2020.
