India’s renewable energy sector achieved another major milestone in April 2026 as the country’s solar power generation reached a record 20,899.61 million units (MU), accounting for more than 71% of the total renewable electricity generated during the month. According to data released by the Central Electricity Authority (CEA), India generated a total of 29,377.91 MU from renewable energy sources excluding large hydro projects, reflecting a strong year-on-year growth of approximately 23.2%.

Solar energy remained the dominant contributor to India’s renewable power mix, driven by rapid additions in utility-scale solar parks, rooftop solar systems, and open-access projects across major states including Rajasthan, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Maharashtra. The continued decline in solar module prices, improved financing availability, and supportive government initiatives such as the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme and PM Surya Ghar Yojana have accelerated installations nationwide. India’s installed solar capacity has already crossed 150 GW as of March 2026, strengthening the country’s position among the world’s top solar markets.

Wind energy remained the second-largest renewable energy contributor during April 2026, generating 6,848.65 MU. Industry experts believe the rapid rise in solar generation is also helping India manage growing electricity demand during summer peak periods. Recent grid data showed solar power contributing significantly during India’s record peak demand events in April 2026, highlighting the increasing role of renewable energy in ensuring grid stability and reducing dependence on fossil fuels. The country’s renewable energy transition is now entering a phase where energy storage, grid modernization, and hybrid renewable systems will become critical growth drivers.

India’s clean energy momentum continues to support the government’s ambitious target of achieving 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030. With continuous investments in solar manufacturing, transmission infrastructure, BESS deployment, and large-scale renewable projects, the country is rapidly strengthening its position as a global renewable energy leader. The latest solar generation milestone further reinforces the growing importance of solar energy in India’s long-term energy security and sustainability roadmap.
