India’s solar energy sector has hit a major milestone, with solar power accounting for 47.6% of the country’s total installed renewable energy capacity as of Q1 2025. This marks a strong upward shift from previous quarters, reflecting the nation’s growing commitment to sustainable and clean energy sources.
According to data from the Central Electricity Authority (CEA), Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), and Mercom India Research, India’s total renewable energy capacity—including large hydro—stood at 218.6 GW, making up 46.1% of the total power capacity mix. Solar alone contributed 22% to India’s total installed power capacity, highlighting its dominant role in the energy transition.
In terms of generation, India produced approximately 42 billion units (BU) of solar electricity in Q1 2025, a sharp rise from 35.2 BU in the previous quarter. This increase reflects the impact of favorable policies, growing investments, and strong momentum in solar installations across the country.
Though conventional energy sources still hold 53.9% of the installed capacity, their share is gradually declining. With solar leading the way, India is steadily transitioning towards a cleaner, more sustainable energy future, positioning itself as a global renewable energy leader.
