The Karnataka Budget 2026 has introduced a major renewable energy initiative with the launch of the Mukhya Mantri Saura Krishi Yojana, a state scheme designed to accelerate solar adoption in the agricultural sector. Announced by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on 6 March 2026, the programme mirrors the Central Government’s PM-KUSUM Component C model, which focuses on solarising agricultural electricity feeders to provide reliable daytime power for farmers.
Under the scheme, the state plans to commission solar power plants with a total capacity of 3,000 MW (3 GW) at substations operated by the Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Limited (KPTCL). These projects will be developed through the Renewable Energy Service Company (RESCO) model, allowing private developers to build and operate the plants while supplying solar power to agricultural feeders. The initiative carries an estimated investment of ₹10,500 crore, reflecting Karnataka’s growing commitment to expanding renewable energy infrastructure.
The budget also includes complementary energy infrastructure investments to support renewable integration. The state government has earmarked ₹3,400 crore for Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) to enhance grid stability and improve renewable energy utilisation. These storage systems will be installed at key substations, including Huliyur, Pavagada, and Kushtagi.
By combining feeder-level solarisation with energy storage and grid upgrades, the Karnataka government aims to strengthen power supply for agriculture while increasing the share of clean energy in the state’s electricity mix. The initiative aligns with national solarisation efforts and highlights the growing importance of decentralised solar power projects in supporting India’s long-term renewable energy goals.
