Under the ambitious Pradhanmantri Suryaghar Muft Bijali Yojna, Maharashtra’s rooftop solar generation has now exceeded 100 MW, according to a media statement issued by MSEDCL (Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited).

A total of 25,086 consumers have installed rooftop solar systems, achieving a cumulative capacity of 101.18 MW.

MSEDCL Managing Director Lokesh Chandra stated that under the scheme launched in February 2024, the Central government has provided a maximum subsidy of ₹78,000 for a 3kW rooftop solar plant.

“For the 25,086 consumers who have opted for rooftop solar, we have provided them with a subsidy of Rs 160 crore which has been directly transferred to their accounts,” he added.

Consumers generating solar power on rooftops can sell the excess to MSEDCL, which offsets their monthly electricity bills. “If there is more generation on the rooftop, it can bring down your power bill to zero and for any surplus generation, you can earn extra income at home,” an official added.

Deputy Chief Minister and State Energy Minister Devendra Fadnavis has instructed MSEDCL to expedite the scheme’s implementation. This scheme aims to provide 300 units of free power to one crore households nationwide, targeting 20 lakh households in Maharashtra, with a budget of ₹75,000 crore allocated for execution.
