Meghalaya Launches ₹500 Crore Solar Mission to Mitigate Power Crisis

Highlights:

  • Meghalaya aiming to install 200-300 MW solar capacity in the coming years.
  • The state will also provide subsidies to promote widespread solar adoption.

Meghalaya CM, Conrad K Sangma has launched a ₹500 crore Solar Mission to ease the state’s ongoing power crisis. The state government plans to invest a sum of ₹100 crore towards this project for the next five years.

The state aims to build a solar power capacity of 200-300 MW.

“The people-centric CM Solar Mission will be a flagship Renewable Energy intervention committed to fostering green and clean energy transformation across the state,” Sangma said during the launch of the programme.

To support the mission and promote widespread solar adoption, Meghalaya will be providing massive subsidies. Larger solar projects can avail a subsidy of up to 70%, while smaller units can claim up to a 50% discount on the installation cost. Moreover, the state government is also working with banks to provide easy financing to consumers.

The government hopes to see at least 30-40 percent of homes with solar power systems in the next few years.
