Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis informed the legislative council that Nagpur district accounts for nearly 15% of registrations state-wide under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojna.

Nagpur district also represented 20% of the total rooftop installations under this government scheme, designed for poor and middle-income households according to central government guidelines.

In the ‘free’ solar rooftop scheme, consumers get their upfront costs reimbursed as subsidies via direct benefit transfer (DBT).

Fadnavis, who also handles the energy portfolio, said “Under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojna, 1,73,272 people have registered on the govt portal to install solar rooftop systems on their homes. In Nagpur district, extensive public awareness has been conducted for the scheme, and 23,664 (13.6%) customers registered for it.”

Nagpur-based MLC Abhijit Wanjarri, along with a couple of others, raised the issue in the legislative council, questioning the delay in subsidy reimbursement for around 5,000 consumers in Nagpur district who installed solar panels.

Fadnavis responded, stating that solar rooftop systems totaling 9.7 MW capacity have already been installed in Nagpur. “A total of 2,241 households have installed rooftop solar and the process of directly transferring the subsidy amount to the respective customers’ accounts through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) scheme is ongoing,” said Fadnavis.

Experts believe that the gradual adoption of solar energy by residential consumers will eventually release electricity supply for heavy industrial use. However, this transition may take a decade or more to achieve optimal efficiency.
