New MNRE Guidelines Aim to Secure Inverter Data Under PM Surya Ghar Scheme

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has issued new compliance guidelines to ensure secure inverter connectivity under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, a national scheme aiming to install rooftop solar systems for one crore households with a 30 GW target.

To address growing concerns over grid security and data privacy, MNRE has mandated that all inverter communication devices—such as dongles and data loggers—must use Machine-to-Machine (M2M) SIM protocols. This step follows warnings about foreign server access posing risks to India’s energy infrastructure.

All inverter-related data will now be hosted on a National Software Platform, managed by MNRE or its authorized agencies, and stored on Indian servers. This ensures that all monitoring, control, and data access remain within the country’s jurisdiction.

MNRE is also developing open and vendor-neutral communication protocols to standardize secure data transmission. Testing of these protocols will begin from September 1, 2025, with mandatory compliance dates to be announced soon. These changes are expected to improve transparency, security, and self-reliance in India’s solar energy ecosystem.
