The Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) plans to establish solar power plants at multiple locations within the city to reduce the electricity costs associated with the 1.04 lakh LED streetlights currently in operation.
By selling the electricity generated from these solar plants to Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd (MSEDCL), the NMC aims to drastically cut down its expenses associated with powering the LED streetlights.
This move is part of broader measures in the civic body’s action plans to reduce emissions.
The state government has initiated a decarbonization roadmap for the energy and building sectors, selecting Nashik as one of six cities for the initial phase.
“We are chalking out an action plan about reducing emissions. Initially, we are focusing on two sectors only: the energy and building sectors, which are significant contributors to greenhouse gas emissions. We are planning to set up solar generation plants in the city. The power generated through the solar plants will be given to MSEDCL, which in turn will give us benefits in the electricity bills for the streetlights,” said NMC officials.
The NMC is assessing potential locations and capacity for solar power plants. Officials emphasize the project is in its early stages, with comprehensive plans to reduce emissions in targeted sectors being developed.
