On Tuesday, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma inaugurated the Northeast India’s biggest solar power plant at Amguri in Sivasagar district of Assam.
The total power generated by the plant will be 70MW.
Jackson Power Private, as a solar power developer, collaborated with the government-owned Assam Power Generation Corporation Ltd (APGCL) on the Rs 300 crore Amguri solar park project.
During the inauguration, the Chief Minister indicated that four additional solar power plants with a combined capacity of 25 MW will be completed soon in various sections of the state.
Mr Sarma stated that 1,000 MW of solar electricity would be developed in Assam within three years, citing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s priority on generating more energy from solar and renewable sources.
“The state government is trying to make Assam a green energy hub. Assam currently requires 2,200 MW power to provide electricity to all households across the state,” he added.
Additionally, he said that the Assam government made a profit of Rs 800 crore this year due to improved electricity bill collection.
On February 19, 2019, then Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal laid the cornerstone for the Amguri solar park project. The project’s commissioning date was set for December 2021.
Noting that the Assam government’s flagship scheme, ‘Orunodoi,’ provides Rs 1,000 per month to nearly 22 lakh beneficiaries, the majority of whom are women, Mr Sarma also stated that from now on, the beneficiaries will receive Rs 1,250 per month to help them pay their power bills.
He added more than seven lakh people would be included in the scheme.
