Now Hyderabad Airport

GMR Hyderabad International Airport Limited has taken another step towards carbon-free movement by setting up another solar power plant. This is the second solar power plant commissioned by Hyderabad International Airport. The capacity of this solar power plant will be 5MW. So now the total capacity of GMR Hyderabad International Airport Limited is 10MW. GMR Hyderabad installed the first 5KW solar power plant in 2015.

45 acres of land have been used for this solar project. Also, more than 30,000 solar panels have been installed for this 10 MW solar power plant. ABB central inverters and polycrystalline photovoltaic (PV) modules have been used in both solar projects.

After the commissioning of this project, GMR Hyderabad International Airport will buy about 12 MU per year less power from the state government, saving approximately 9 million (~$120,697) per month.

With the generation of this power plant, 50% of the electricity requirement of Hyderabad airport will be met, which will help in reducing the carbon footprint of around 2.8 million KG. Which is equivalent to 140,000 fully grown trees.

CEO of GHIAL, Mr. Pradeep Panicker said, “GMR Hyderabad International Airport is committed to green and renewable energy, and this is a major milestone for us and a critical step in the right direction. As a sustainable airport operator, we have rolled out many initiatives to actively reduce carbon emissions. As a member airport of the Airports Council International (ACI), we are committed to attaining net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.”

Intending to contribute towards meeting India’s green energy target, several airports have commissioned solar power projects on their campuses. Which already includes airports in Bengaluru, Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram, Hyderabad, Chennai, Calicut, Trichy, Vijayawada, and Tirupati city.
