Patna Plans to Add 10 MW of Rooftop Solar Capacity by Year End

Highlights:

  • SBPDCL plans to add an installed solar capacity of 10 MW by December 2023.
  • The agency has already received applications for over 14 MW capacity from domestic consumers.

The South Bihar Power Distribution Company Limited (SBPDCL) has set a target of adding 10 MW installed solar capacity by December, under the Grid Connected Rooftop Scheme. The civic agency announced that they have already received 4,439 applications from domestic consumers.

Bihar has ample solar energy potential, says state energy minister Mr. Bijendra Prasad Yadav. To harness this potential, the state government is offering a net metering facility for extra savings and a grant in addition to the central subsidy. The minister encouraged residents to take advantage of the rooftop solar scheme.

SBPDCL has completed solar panel installation in the houses of over 500 consumers. The agency has also directed its assistant engineers to map the technical feasibility of the premises of the remaining consumers.

“Our consumers have shown interest in the scheme. We have planned to install 10MW of solar panels by the end of this year, but we have already received applications for installing solar panels totalling 14.5MW. Consumers whose site survey and technical feasibility have been completed can submit the prescribed fees and avail the benefits of the scheme,” said Mahendra Kumar, Managing Director of SBPDCL.

In the past year, the Bihar government has introduced multiple projects to promote solar energy adoption. Recently, the state announced plans to develop Bodh Gaya, Rajgir, and Vaishali as solar cities. Moreover, Patna Metro Rail Corporation has started the process of solarizing all stations.
