During the world leaders’ summit at the beginning of the 26th session of the UN climate change conference (COP26) in Glasgow, United Kingdom in the first week of November, India and the United Kingdom will jointly launch the Green Grids Initiative-One Sun One World One Grid (GGI-OSOWOG), a transnational grid to transport solar power to different countries.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the plan three years ago, and it will be supported in the form of a political declaration during the International Solar Alliance’s (ISA) fourth general assembly, which will take place from October 18 to 21.
According to sources, Indian Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi will attend the world leaders’ summit at COP26 on November 1-2 and will kick off the event with UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson in the presence of other heads of state and government. They stated that the UK would get a formal certification to this effect soon.
During the first half of COP26, US President Joe Biden, Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison, and other leaders will attend the conference, which will see countries finalize rules for the carbon market mechanism (Article 6) under the Paris Agreement. The Article 6 guidelines are the final component of the Agreement that has still to be completed.
The OSOWOG’s implementation will be based on the idea that the ‘Sun Never Sets,’ and that it is, therefore, a constant at any given geographical place, globally, at any given time. The ISA, which India and France jointly formed on the sidelines of COP21 in Paris in 2015, would be the global grid’s implementing organization.
Next week’s ISA fourth general assembly will be an opportunity for the intergovernmental body’s 80 member countries to discuss how to approach the OSOWOG in a way that will help the world meet its collective mitigation goal of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius by 2050 compared to pre-industrial (1850-1900) levels. The ISA’s strategic plan for the next five years will be discussed at the assembly. It will address a variety of topics, including private sector participation strategy. The ISA meeting will focus on the ‘Trillion Dollars Solar Investment Roadmap for 2030,’ in addition to updates on the ‘One Sun One World One Grid’ program.
The global solar grid will be built in three phases, according to the ISA’s concept note on OSOWOG. The ‘Indian Grid’ will connect with networks in West Asia, South Asia, and South-East Asia in the first phase to exchange solar and other renewable energy resources to meet electrical needs, even during peak demand. In the second phase, it will be connected to the African power pools. To realize the OSOWOG’s aim, the third phase would involve the global interconnection of the electricity transmission system.
