Pune Metro to Install 9 MW of Solar Capacity by Feb 2024

Highlights:

  • Pune Metro to Install solar panels over several stations
  • The organization’s existing capacity helps save ₹25.5 lakhs every month

Pune Metro plans to install 9 MW of solar capacity under the Green Metro Initiative. As per their official statement, 5 MW solar capacity will be installed by November 2023 and the remaining will get completed by February 2024.

Currently, solar plants have been installed at 9 stations of the Pune metro: 4 stations on the PCMC to Phugewadi line and 5 stations on the Vanaz to Garware College line. The total capacity is 2.3 MW and the plants generate approximately 11,500 units of electricity every day.

Further, officials have also stated that the solar-powered stations help the organization save around ₹85,000 daily. This amounts to a monthly savings of ₹25.5 lakhs (85,000 x 30).

Pune Metro has also installed a 750kW solar unit on the roof of the Integrated Workshop Building at Range Hill Depot. The new solar plant generates around 2800 units of electricity.

Pune Metro is not the only metro organization that is slowly transitioning to solar energy. In recent years, several states have installed solar panels over metro stations. In March, Delhi Metro announced the goal of developing 10 MW of solar capacity for Phase IV stations.

Moreover, Patna Metro has also announced plans to solarize all elevated and underground stations. Kochi, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad metro stations are also in the process of installing solar panels to power operations.

The decision of public organizations to use clean energy is a great step forward. It not only helps India in achieving its net zero goal but also motivates citizens to contribute towards the same.
