Punjab has dramatically expanded its renewable energy capacity over the past decade, reaching 2,174 MW in 2024-25—more than three times the 660 MW recorded in 2014-15, Union Minister of State for Power Shripad Naik informed the Rajya Sabha. This growth aligns with India’s broader shift towards clean energy, with renewables now contributing to over 49% of the nation’s total electricity generation.
A closer look reveals consistent progress: installed capacity climbed steadily across the years—895 MW in 2015-16, 1,286 MW in 2016-17, and continued rising to 2,067 MW by 2023-24. Hydroelectric generation also improved, with large hydro capacity jumping from 3,090 MW to 3,827 MW in the same period.
The surge in renewable energy is a testament to Punjab’s commitment to a green transition. Boosted by solar and hydro investments, this momentum aligns with national efforts to decarbonize the power sector and offer cleaner, more sustainable energy solutions for the state.
