To save on electricity bills, Telangana’s Bhadrachalam Ramalayam Temple has decided to set up solar panels on its premises. Temple authorities have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Hyderabad-based Sun Technologies, for an uninterrupted power supply to the temple for 25 years.
Authorities aware of the matter have stated that the temple witnessed a drastic fall in income level due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Moreover, Ramalayam does not receive any funds from the state government either.
The decision to go solar, was made to reduce the rising financial burden.
The temple pays ₹9 per unit to TRANSCO, an electricity transmission company, and spends a monthly average of ₹6-7 lakhs per month on energy. Once the solar energy systems are set up, Ramalayam will have to pay only ₹5.50 per unit for solar power to Sun Technologies.
Temple’s Savings-
₹9-₹5.50 = ₹3.5/ Unit
“Once we switch completely to solar power, we will be saving at least ₹2 lakh per month,” said V Ravindranath, Executive Engineer of Ramalayam. Hence, by installing solar panels, Ramalayam will save a minimum amount of ₹24 lakhs per year.
With the project, Bhadrachalam Ramalayam will become the first temple in the state to get solar-powered lighting.
