The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy informed that the country has crossed the 100 GW of renewable energy installed capacity target. While 50 GW is under installation and 27 GW is under tendering. There are no major hydropower projects are included in this capacity. If large hydroelectric projects are also included in this, then this capacity will increase from 100 GW to 146 GW.
According to the MNRE report, India ranks fourth in the world in terms of renewable energy capacity, whereas, India ranks are fourth & fifth in installed capacity of wind power & solar power respectively.
The released report stated, “India has set ambitious targets for itself in the area of Renewable Energy, which the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy is committed to achieving.“
By 2030, India has set a target of installing a renewable energy capacity of 450 GW.
The Union Minister for the Ministry of Power and the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, Mr. R.K. Singh tweeted, “The achievement of installed RE capacity of 100 GW is an important milestone in India’s journey towards its target of 450 GW by 2030.”
India’s installed renewable energy (including large hydro projects) capacity stood at 143.9 GW, accounting for a share of 37.4% in the overall power mix at the end of the second quarter of 2021.
