To increase the share of renewable energy, the state government of Himachal Pradesh is planning to build a solar power facility in the Kinnaur district. Sukhram Chaudhary, the State MPP, and Power Minister have informed the Central government that a proposal to seek consent has been sent.
Aside from the Kinnaur solar power project, an 800 MW solar power plant is being built in the Spiti region, according to Sukhram Chaudhary. The minister said that a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for the Spiti solar power project has been signed with Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam (SJVN).
SJVN has already identified Hikkim, Kibber, Demul, Hull, Ladarcha, Losar, and Poh as potential solar power project sites, according to Chaudhary, and has sought a long-term agreement with Bharat Power Grid Corporation Ltd and the Central Electricity Authority for the Spiti project.
Rooftop solar units with a capacity of 5504 KW (5.5 MW) have been installed in 583 government buildings, according to the power ministry. In total, these rooftop solar panels are currently producing 1.24 crore units, saving the government Rs 5.87 crore every year.
Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur recently revealed in his state budget speech that the state is working to become India’s first green state by relying entirely on renewable energy.
The Himachal Pradesh administration stated that creative strategies to get the state out of PPAs linked with thermal power generating corporations that will expire in 2034 are being investigated. These include lobbying the government to encourage initiatives to abandon these accords through financial means.
Apart from being a power surplus state, Himachal has been a small hydro powerhouse, accounting for over 80% of small hydro generation. However, a problem has been the expense of modest hydro generating, which has stayed persistently over Rs 6 per unit in most circumstances, putting pressure on people to look for cheaper alternatives like thermal and other renewables. With solar, the state can now seek a lower price without the pollutants that come with thermal.
