SJVN to Develop Floating Solar Projects in Assam

Highlights:

  • SJVN’s subsidiary signs an MoU with APDCL to develop floating solar projects in Assam.
  • The projects with 1000MW capacity will cover an area of 4,500 hectares on the water surface.
  • PSU plans to develop a 50,000MW non-fossil fuel based energy capacity by 2040.

SJVN’s subsidiary, Green Energy Limited (SGEL) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL) to develop floating solar power projects of 1000MW capacity in Assam. SJVN and APDCL will incorporate a joint venture company for the project.

Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam (SJVN) is an Indian public sector undertaking, involved in hydroelectric power generation and transmission. The PSU will invest a sum of ₹6000 crores into the venture.

The project will generate 2,192 million units in the first year of commissioning. 50,435 million units of cumulative energy will get generated over the subsequent 25 years. Further, the power plant will cover approximately 4,500 hectares of water area.

“An investment of ₹6,000 crore will be made by the SJVN for developing the project. During the construction and operation stages, approximately 4,000 persons will get direct and indirect employment. Carbon emissions’ reduction to the tune of 1,07,383 tonne for the first year and 24,70,732 tonnes for the complete life span will be achieved from this project,” says Mr. Nand Lal Sharma, Chairman & MD of SJVN.

He further added that the initiative will save approximately 2,500 hectares of land as floating solar projects do not require “land levelling, removal of vegetation or any displacement”.

SJVN has also bagged a 105MW floating solar project in an auction held by Maharashtra State Power Generation Company (MAHAGENCO). The organization has stated that the cost of this project would be around ₹730 crores, and it will produce 230 million units in the first year and 5,420 million units over the next 25 years.

The PSU plans to play a vital role in the clean energy transition of the nation. To achieve this objective, SJVN is getting involved in the development of solar power projects across the nation.

In May, SJVN was awarded the tender for a ₹585 crores floating solar project in Madhya Pradesh. Moreover, in June, the organization announced a ₹1,000 crores investment in three solar energy projects in Uttar Pradesh.

SJVN has created a vast portfolio of 42,000MW, which spans India, Nepal, and Bhutan. 97% of these projects are based on non-fossil fuel sources. The organization is targeting the development of an additional 5000MW capacity by 2023, 25,000MW by 2030, and 50,000MW capacity by 2040.
