A recent study published by market research firm, JMK Research, shows that India added 13,956 MW of solar capacity and 1,847 MW of wind capacity from January 2022 to December 2022. These capacity additions were 17.5% and 26.6% higher respectively, as compared to 2021.
The cumulative green energy capacity (excluding large hydro) reached 120.85 GW.
Solar Energy was the largest contributor, occupying a 52% share of the total RE capacity. This was followed by wind energy at 35%, bio-power at 9%, and small hydropower at 4%. JMK research also adds that the share of solar has increased by five percentage points in the past year.

“From January-December 2022, about 11.3 GW of new utility-scale solar capacity was added in India. Compared to the same period in 2021, installations were 47 percent higher,” said JMK in its analysis.
The rooftop solar segment did not witness similar growth. India added about 1.9 GW in rooftop solar in the past year, which was 42% lesser than the 2021 installations. A similar trend was noticed in the off-grid and distributed solar segment, which added 700 MW capacity in the past year, 50% lesser than in 2021.
The top states with the highest large-scale installations were Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Tamil Nadu. The state of Gujarat was also the leading state in the wind power segment.
