Soon, the Tamil Nadu government intends to build 4,000 MW of solar power generating units and 2,000 MW of solar parks with battery storage capacity.
The proposed projects are part of the State government’s 10-year plan to build 20,000 MW of solar energy with enough battery storage, according to State Energy Minister V Senthilbalaji. To address the increased need for electricity, the energy department is proposing a solar power park in each of the state’s districts.
It also plans to build LNG-fueled power plants with a capacity of 2,000 MW. Small units of 18-20 MW of power will be built under this initiative. The Regassified-LNG feedstock will come from the IOC’s Ennore LNG facility. When wind and solar electricity are unavailable, the power supplied by these units is projected to fill the void.
Tamil Nadu Generation & Distribution Corporation Ltd (Tangedco), the state electricity distribution utility, is considering building a 500 MW pumped storage hydroelectric facility in Kanyakumari and a 500 MW pumped storage hydroelectric plant in Theni. It would also conduct feasibility studies for the construction of 11 pumped storage units with a total capacity of 7,000 MW across the state.
Mr. Senthilbalaji spoke, “Also, the government will undertake steps to complete the 2,000 MW Sillahalla (Nilgiris District) pumped storage hydropower plant at the earliest.”
The Energy Minister further added, “Tangedco had planned to procure power from the market for short and medium terms to tide over the possible shortfall in power demand during October 2021-May 2022. It also plans to supply the surplus wind power to neighboring states to source power during the summer season.”
Transformer Monitoring System
Tangedco plans to implement a Transformer Monitoring System, which will allow transformers to be monitored remotely and connected to a SCADA system. This program will help with addressing power outages quickly, accurately calculating T&D (transmission and distribution) losses, and preventing power theft, among other things. Tangedco is responsible for 3,63,200 transformers throughout the state.
The Energy Department will also spend Rs 7,892 crore to improve power supply infrastructure, including the installation of fly ash conveying system, new substations, transformers, and feeders, among other things. Tangedco intends to supply 1 lakh new agriculture service connections this fiscal year.
