The Brihanmumbai Electricity Supply and Transport (BEST) just announced a 40% subsidy for solar rooftop installations in buildings in Mumbai. Along with it, the Central Government offered financial support for these solar projects which total 580KW.
Similar solar rooftop scheme were proposed by other electric utility companies, including Adani Electricity and Tata Power in Mumbai, with the support from Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) in Delhi.
The number of BEST energy customers in Mumbai who has installed rooftop solar PV panels is steadily increasing. According to the latest numbers given by the initiative on Friday, 349 customers have chosen rooftop panels under the recently announced central program.
A ward has the most such customers (89 connections), followed by D and F/North wards, each with 51 connections. While 79 residential consumers chose rooftop panels with a capacity of less than 20kWp (kilowatts peak), 88 consumers/housing societies chose panels with a capacity of more than 20kWp, according to officials.
Solar panels have been put on the rooftops of 97 commercial customers, including stores and offices, and 77 institutions and public service organizations. Net Metering allows solar rooftop owners to save money on their monthly electricity costs, according to officials.
Residential customers of Mumbai choose a 1kWp solar panel, which produces 1,400-1,500 units per year. This equates to 125 units every month on average. A net metering system ensures that any solar energy generated is fed into the grid and deducted from the customers’ monthly electricity bill.
For example, if you create 125 units per month from solar electricity and consume 300 units per month at home, you will only have to pay for 175 units after deducting units generated by a solar rooftop. According to officials, monthly savings might vary from Rs 800 to Rs 2,400, depending on the number of solar panels installed (1-3kWp).
