The Uttar Pradesh government is all set to develop the Bundelkhand expressway as the state’s first solar-powered expressway. Solar panels will be installed along the 296 km stretch of the expressway under the Public Private Partnership (PPP) model.
The state is targeting a generational capacity of 550 MW with the project and a land space of 1700 hectares has been identified for the initiative. Once complete, the Bundelkhand project is expected to power one lakh households along the expressway.
Uttar Pradesh Expressway Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA) is responsible for developing the project. Moreover, the bidding process will start soon.
The new expressway solar project will support electric vehicle charging, help cut down on harmful emissions, and combat climate change. It will also boost economic growth by expanding access to the power grid. Further, the project will also create jobs locally and provide electricity to nearby communities.
UPEIDA is also set to benefit from this project. Officials have stated that the organization is set to earn a massive ₹4 crore income through lease rent and make an annual profit of ₹50 crore by selling the generated energy.
The easy availability of land in the region, along with its dry climate, makes Bundelkhand a great location for setting up solar panels. The expressway is modern, well-equipped, and divided into two parts- the main carriageway and a service lane. In between these two, there is a vacant strip that is approximately 15-20 meters wide. The state plans to cover this land with solar panels.
The solarized expressway will generate clean energy and help Uttar Pradesh contribute to India’s goal of developing 500 GW by 2030.
