Vice President of India Said, "Make Rooftop Solar Panels, Rainwater Harvesting Mandatory in Big Buildings."

On Sunday (12th Sep 2021), Vice President Mr. M Venkaiah Naidu urged all states and local governments to make rooftop solar panels, and rainwater harvesting essential for major buildings, and government organizations, as well as adequate lighting and ventilation.

Mr. Naidu stated that now is the time for all states and local governments to consider adopting the model building regulations for new projects, as he dedicated the 1.5-megawatt rooftop solar power plant at JIMPMER to the country.

Further, Mr. Naidu added, “Solar rooftop plants, solar water heaters, and rainwater harvesting must be made mandatory for a certain category of buildings exceeding the specified size or power consumption thresholds. Large institutions and public sector organizations must strive towards sustainability in their operations by using renewable energy.”

He proposed that rooftop solar plants be used more widely in enterprises and large institutions such as colleges, government buildings, and warehouses.

“It will not only benefit the organization at a micro-level by saving costs but will also benefit the nation as a whole as we strive towards sustainable development,” stated the Vice President.

He praised India’s recent milestone of 100 GW of installed renewable energy capacity, claiming that the country is on its way to become the world leader in the field of “energy transformation.” Rooftop plants, according to Naidu, make use of unused space on buildings, generate power near the point of consumption, and decrease transmission losses.

The Vice President urged state, federal, and local governments to join forces as Team India to popularise solar energy and raise public knowledge about the benefits of putting solar panels on their roofs. He advocated for large-scale public awareness efforts to promote solar rooftop system subsidies and the associated power savings.

“People must understand that the initial costs of setting up a solar plant after subsidy is offset by the benefits in the long term.”

Referring to the lessons from the pandemic, Naidu stressed the importance of ventilation and air circulation in buildings. “Sunlight is a natural disinfectant. Our ancestors understood this as it reflected in their planning and construction of houses,” the Vice President noted. He underscored the need to create living and working spaces with ample ventilation and natural light to maintain good health.

Naidu also praised medical institutes like JIPMER for demonstrating exceptional determination and rising to the challenge during the epidemic. He said that the country has been able to effectively combat the epidemic thanks to the combined efforts of such institutions, physicians, medical personnel, and healthcare workers.
