The share of wind and solar energy in the global electricity mix rose from 10% in 2021 to 12% in 2022, as per the latest Global Electricity Review published by energy think tank Ember.
Moreover, the report states that 3 of the world’s top 5 generators of wind and solar energy are in Asia. China sources 14% (1241 TWh) of its electricity from wind and solar, Japan sources 11% (107 TWh) and India 9% (165 TWh).
Solar energy has maintained its position as the fastest-growing energy resource for the 18th year in a row, with solar generation increasing by 24% since 2021. The latest figures reveal that solar energy accounts for 4.5% of global electricity production, and China has emerged as the leading solar energy producer, harnessing the sun’s power to generate the most electricity.
India’s energy demand increased by 18% last year. 23% of this demand growth was met through wind and solar energy. Also, solar energy generation in the country increased by 39% in the last financial year. The share of wind and solar energy in the electricity mix of six Indian states was higher than the global average.
State | Share |
---|---|
Goa | 78% |
Rajasthan | 36% |
Gujarat | 30% |
Karnataka | 28% |
Tamil Nadu | 22.2% |
Andhra Pradesh | 19.2% |
“India’s clean electricity transition journey has now reached a critical juncture. The country needs to build upon its recent solar power surge. It needs to ramp up renewable generation capacity to meet its growing demand, build enough storage capacity to meet peak demand, and develop infrastructure to facilitate grid integration” said Aditya Lolla, Senior analyst at Ember.
The document predicts that clean energy will be able to meet the total growth in electricity demand in 2023. Further, solar and wind energy together will form the backbone of the future electricity system and provide nearly 70% of global electricity by 2050.
The world has reached the “beginning of the end of the fossil age,” Malgorzata Wiatros-Motyka, the lead author of the research says. “We are entering the clean power era,” she added
