Highlights:

  • UK-based firm is creating a 2km long solar array in space
  • The solar farm will remain in the orbit and beam back clean energy to earth

A UK-based technology firm is producing a solar farm in space to meet the country’s future energy needs. The organization, Space Solar’ will create a 2km solar array that will orbit around Earth and generate clean energy.

The energy will then be beamed back to Earth like mobile phone signals. The project is expected to be launched by 2035

“Space-based solar power has long been considered the ultimate clean energy source. We’re really going to be able to make a material impact on net zero and a bright future for the planet.” Said Sam Alden from Space Solar.

The company has said that this space-based solar technology would generate 13 times more renewable energy than a similar-sized project on Earth. Moreover, it would also remain active all the time, which is a major benefit.

The firm will use antenna fields to receive the energy on Earth. These fields are said to use half the land area of conventional solar farms and one-tenth the area of offshore wind farms. Moreover, Space Solar is committed to delivering 20% of Earth’s energy supply through 600 such satellites.

The UK government has invested approximately £6 million into the company’s research projects and over £5 million in a similar international project called CASSIOPeiA.

This technological advancement represents a crucial step in addressing our energy and environmental challenges and once successful, will pave the way for a brighter and cleaner planet for generations to come.
