Glasgow

The Green Grids Initiative – One Sun One World One Grid (GGI-OSOWOG) was launched at the COP26 local weather convention in Glasgow as the world’s first interconnected photovoltaic grid collaboration. The International Solar Alliance (ISA), India’s ISA presidency, and the United Kingdom’s COP presidency presented plans for the first global network of globally interconnected solar energy grids, GGI-OSOWOG, at the COP26 climate conference in Glasgow, according to an ISA statement.

The news was accompanied by the declaration of One Sun. “Achieving the One Sun One World One Grid vision through interconnected green grids could be transformative, allowing all of us to meet the Paris Agreement’s aims for halting damaging climate change, speeding up the clean energy transition, and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. These measures have the potential to boost green investment while also creating millions of excellent jobs. We can contribute to a more peaceful and wealthy world by sharing the sun’s energy, according to the proclamation.

The initiative, led by India and the United Kingdom in collaboration with the International Solar Alliance and the World Bank Group, aims to harvest photovoltaic electricity wherever the sun shines, ensuring that generated electrical energy reaches those who need it most.
The GGI-OSOWOG will bring together a global coalition of national governments, international financial and technical organizations, legislators, energy system operators, and information leaders to accelerate the creation of new infrastructure required for a world powered by clean energy.

The project aims to reduce reliance on non-renewable energy sources such as coal by allowing them to purchase low-cost solar energy from various overseas locations.

The International Solar Alliance (ISA) aims to generate USD 1 trillion in funding by 2030 to assist developing countries in expanding their solar energy systems, both in transmission and technology, to meet their power needs.

The program is widely seen as a significant and risky step forward in ISA’s ongoing attempts to develop a global photovoltaic transition roadmap, and it may help the organization realize its vision for a photovoltaic power future.

“The One Sun One World One Grid and Green Grids Initiative is an idea whose time has come,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi said at the event. These integrated transnational grids will be key answers if the world is to move toward a clean and green future.”
Boris Johnson, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, also spoke at the event.
The project will promote worldwide interconnectivity in the Middle East, South Asia, and Southeast Asia while utilizing African energy reserves.

Modi first proposed the international grid concept during the ISA’s first meeting in October 2018. The UK promised technical, financial, and analysis support for the OSOWOG project in May 2021.

The International Solar Alliance (ISA) was founded at COP21 in Paris and has recently expanded its membership to include all United Nations member states. 90 people have signed the petition and 193 people could join.
