Assam has inaugurated a 25 MW solar power plant in Udalguri to promote clean energy. The 300-crore solar project, unveiled by the chief minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, will benefit over 65,000 residents of the Darrang, Udalguri, and Sonitpur districts.

The plant was established on the ‘build, own, operate’ model under the Assam Solar Energy Policy 2017.

“We have set a target of meeting 50 percent of our state’s power demand through solar energy by 2026. We will be entering into an agreement with Neyveli Lignite Corporation for a 1,000-MW project and have plans for another project of similar capacity,” says Sarma.

Assam has ambitious plans to become self-reliant in green energy and mitigate environmental pollution. The state is making major strides to reach that goal.

Sarma said another solar project of 25-MW capacity will be inaugurated at Boko in Kamrup district, with two more in the pipeline. Recently, the Assam government also inaugurated a 70 MW solar park in Amguri, the largest in Northeast India.

With its solar energy capacity set to reach 215 MW in the next two months, the state is aiming to become one of the key solar energy-producing states in the next five years.
