Delhi authorities plan to install over 10,000 solar panels on a 6km stretch of the Najafgarh drain. The project, which will be jointly executed by Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) and BSES, is expected to generate around 5 MW of solar energy.
The Najafgarh drain spans an area of 57 km and meets the Yamuna River near Wazirabad. Moreover, the drain is currently being cleaned and restored.
The plan to install solar panels was first floated by Lieutenant Governor V.K Saxena, who instructed the Irrigation and Flood Control (I&FC) Department to conduct a feasibility study of the area.
Six spots have been identified on the 6 km stretch from Dhansa to Ghumanhera in Southwest Delhi, where mini-solar plants will be set up. BSES will support the initiative by integrating the pooled power from the solar panels into the grid. This pilot project will utilize the unused space and help Delhi meet its solar energy targets.
“BRPL (BSES Rajdhani Power Limited) shall help SECI in evacuating the power at two locations near Rawta and Ghummanhera, once SECI brings the pooled power till the identified points. It is anticipated that 10,000 – 12,000 solar panels will be installed by SECI under this project, but the final number may vary based on the panel ratings used in the project,” stated an official aware of the matter.
Moreover, the generated power will be used in southwest Delhi itself.
In January 2023, Delhi introduced its new solar policy with a target of installing 6 GW of solar capacity by 2025. The state wants to increase the share of solar energy in the power mix from 9% to 25% in the next few years. Such initiatives, among various others, are certain to aid the Delhi government in achieving these ambitious goals.
