India to have a Module Manufacturing Capacity of 100 GW Per Annum by 2026

India plans to have 100 GW/ annum of solar module manufacturing capacity by 2026, says MNRE secretary Mr. Bhupinder Bhalla. He also stated that India aims to strengthen its domestic module manufacturing chain to improve energy security and achieve the target of 290 GW of solar capacity by 2030.

“This will not only make India self-sufficient in solar manufacturing but also enable us to export a significant part of our output and we are quite confident of achieving this,” said the minister while addressing a solar workshop in Goa.

The solar energy workshop on Universal Energy Access at the 14th Clean Energy Ministerial and 8th Mission Innovation was held from 19th-22nd July in Goa. The event was scheduled on the margins of the G20 Energy Transitions Ministerial Meeting.

As of now, India has achieved an installed solar capacity of 68 GW, which includes approximately 2.4 GW off-grid capacity.

Moreover, the solar module manufacturing capacity stands at 27 GW, and the solar cell is at 7 GW. Mr. Bhalla announced that the PLI scheme would add another 48 GW to this number. “Not only this, most of these companies (PLI awardees) are planning to add much more than what is being awarded to them,” he said.

Mr. Bhalla further announced that solar energy will be crucial in meeting India’s net zero target for 2070.

The Indian government has introduced multiple policies to ramp up domestic manufacturing of solar equipment and achieve self-sufficiency in recent years. Moreover, a new report by the Institute of Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA) and JMK Research and Analytics states that India is on the path to becoming the World’s Second Largest PV Manufacturer by 2026.
