India’s Cumulative Rooftop Solar Capacity Crosses 10 GW

Highlights:

  • India witnessed a 477% increase in Rooftop solar capacity in the last 4 years
  • Gujarat alone accounts for 30% of India’s total rooftop solar capacity

The total rooftop solar capacity in the country has crossed the 10 GW mark. Moreover, Gujarat accounts for nearly 30% of this capacity, and has emerged as the leading state in the segment. Gujarat’s share is 3.2 GW, followed by Maharashtra at 1.9 GW and Rajasthan at 1.1 GW.

Analysts credit Gujarat’s success to its effective residential policy and DISCOMs’ positive stance on rooftop solar projects. Recently, states like Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, and the union territory of Delhi have also begun actively promoting rooftop solar, as reported by JMK Research-IEEFA.

Moreover, India witnessed a 477% increase in Rooftop solar from March 31, 2019 (1.8 GW) to November 30, 2023 (10.4 GW). This tremendous growth can be traced back to government’s Rooftop Solar Programme.

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) started Phase-II of the Rooftop Solar Programme in August 2019 to reach a 40 GW capacity in the rooftop solar (RTS) sector. The program’s total cost is ₹11,814 crore, with ₹6,600 crore as Central Financial Assistance (CFA) and ₹4,985 crore as incentives for Distribution Companies.

The plan aimed to install 4 GW of RTS capacity in residential areas by offering CFA. As of November 30, 2023, the total subsidy released under the programme is about ₹2900 crore. Further the Rooftop solar program has been extended until March 31, 2026, without any changes to the initially approved financial allocation.

Additionally, a recent report by the Council on Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW) had revealed that India has a potential to deploy 637 GW of rooftop solar capacity across 25 crore households.
