The Indian government has allocated a sum of ₹8,100 crores for the ‘Development of Solar Parks and Ultra Mega Solar Power Projects” scheme, stated R.K Singh, the Minister of New and Renewable Energy in a written reply to Rajya Sabha.
Moreover, the scheme has been extended up to FY 2025-26, without any additional financial burdens.
He also stated that the Indian government has sanctioned 50 solar parks across 12 states so far. The total capacity of these projects is approximately 38 GW. As of August 2023, 11 solar parks with a capacity of 8.5 GW have been completed, while 7 solar parks with 3.9 GW capacity are in the implementation phase.
Within these parks, solar projects with a total capacity of 10.2 GW have been developed. The Minister additionally said that there has been a growth of 2,292 MW in the electricity generation capacity of solar projects implemented across different Solar Parks in the past three years, including the present year.
Approximately 69,000 hectares of land have been procured up to this point for Solar Parks. The provision of land for solar parks will be the responsibility of respective State/UT Governments. Moreover, the Solar Park scheme promotes the utilization of non-agricultural or wasteland for the development of Solar Parks.
India has a target of 280 GW solar capacity for 2030. Towards this goal, the country has already achieved 70 GW solar capacity as of now and aims to add more in the coming years.
