Kochi Metro Explores Solar Power as a Solution to Meet 100% of Energy Demand

Highlights:

  • KMRL is planning to set up solar parks in Alappuzha and Kasaragod to meet power needs
  • The organization has approximately 100 acres of government land available for the planned projects.

Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KRML) is considering using solar power for all its energy needs. To achieve this, KRML will create solar parks in Alappuzha and Kasaragod, as stated by Mr. Loknath Behera, KRML’s managing director.

“The idea is to produce 100 percent power using solar energy. Around 45-50 acres of land in Kasaragod will be utilized to build a solar park. A similar park will also be set up in Alappuzha to generate electricity solely for the operations of Kochi Water Metro” said Mr. Behera. The proposal for the projects is awaiting approval from the state government.

KRML’s objective is to eliminate operational costs by the next fiscal year. The organization’s solar park at Muttom Yard contributes 56% of its energy demand. Moreover, from April 2022 to March 2023, KRML’s solar plants generated a total of 13 GWh of solar energy.

The upcoming solar park in Kasaragod will generate over 13 megawatts of power, while discussions for the Alappuzha solar plant are in the early stages. KMRL has approximately 100 acres of government land available for the planned projects.

KRML is not the only metro rail corporation switching to clean energy. In the past few months, several organizations have announced plans to develop solar projects. Delhi Metro has set a goal of developing 10 MW Solar Power Capacity for Phase IV stations. Moreover, Pune Metro is in the process of implementing 9 MW capacity till Feb 2024.
