The Indian government plans to develop 15 GW of rooftop solar capacity, by setting up solar panels on government buildings, and commercial and Industrial (C&I) spaces by 2024-25. The data was revealed by senior officials in the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE).
Moreover, eight Public Sector Undertaking (PSUs) that were previously given the responsibility of setting up residential RTS capacity under the Rooftop solar programme, have been asked to undertake solar installations on government buildings as well.
“CPSUs will work with government departments, both the Government of India (GOI) and the states, for the saturation of buildings with RTS. They would adopt the RESCO model also for government buildings,” stated an MNRE official aware of the matter.
In a RESCO model, a third-party service provider installs, operates, and maintains the solar power system in the consumer’s space. The power generated is sold to the consumer at a decided power tariff.
Towards this initiative, the government will soon start a pan-India survey to gauge the potential of installing rooftop solar plants at the state and central buildings.
Apart from this, MNRE is also planning to set up model solar villages in every district that will encourage rooftop solar adoption in rural areas.
Prime Minister Modi has just introduced the Surya Ghar Yojana to bring solar power to one crore households. Additionally, the Indian government aims to achieve 45 gigawatts of rooftop solar capacity within three years, covering residential, government, commercial, and industrial sectors.
