The Tamil Nadu Energy Development Agency (TEDA) has floated a tender to install grid-connected PV systems over government buildings. As part of this initiative, solar plants will be installed over collectorates, commercial tax offices, court complexes, etc.
The civic agency aims to install a cumulative 20 MW of solar capacity, at a cost of ₹120 crore in 2024.
TEDA officials state that they have been approached to install rooftop PV systems on nearly 100 government buildings. Moreover, this number can go up as the tender is finalized. Organizations that get the tender will install and maintain the solar PV system for a period of 5 years.
The state government has made significant efforts to boost green energy infrastructure in recent years. The Tamil Nadu government has installed 973 grid-connected solar power systems in educational institutions, hostels, and hospitals.
74 solar PV systems have been set up for public lighting and 78 worship places have installed solar panels. In Chennai, solar plants have been recently installed at the Anna Institute of Management, Tamil Nadu Medicinal Plant Farms, and Herbal Medicine Corporation Ltd along with highways research stations.
Universities and Government schools across the state have started setting up rooftop solar PV systems under the CAPEX model.
The green energy generated by all these systems is also injected into the grid, which reduces the electricity expenses of the building and increases the share of green energy in the energy mix.
Tamil Nadu is targeting 20 GW of installed solar capacity by 2030. The state government is also setting up district-level solar parks to achieve this ambitious target.
