Highlights:

  • UP is set to invest a significant sum in clean energy projects as part of the state’s strategy to meet 40% of energy demand through alternate sources
  • The state’s RE agency has also shared the plan for upcoming solar and renewable energy projects

Uttar Pradesh is all set to invest a sum of ₹1 lakh crore in 125 clean energy projects. These projects are part of the state government’s strategy to meet 40% of its energy requirement through solar and alternate energy sources.

The announcement was made by the Uttar Pradesh New and Renewable Energy Development Agency (UPNEDA).

“At the Global Investor Summit held in 2023, the state government secured investment proposals totaling ₹40 lakh crore, with a significant portion allocated for solar power and other clean energy projects under the ‘Akshay Urja’ Scheme” explained Mr. Anupam Shukla, Director, UPNEDA.

The director also shared plans for solar projects that are either in stages of implementation or will be developing in the future.

  • A 1 GW floating solar plant will be set up on Matatila Dam in Lalitpur district at an investment of ₹6500 crore
  • A 1.2 GW Solar Power Park in the Jalaun district
  • A 50 MW floating solar plant in Bhakhira Bird Sanctuary in Eastern UP
  • A 40 MW solar power plant on 165 acres of land in Ayodhya under solar city project
  • Another floating solar/ground-mounted solar project of undefined capacity will also be set up in the Bakhira Lake area

Apart from solar, the state government also has plans to set up close-loop pump storage projects in Eastern Uttar Pradesh.

In the past 5 years, Uttar Pradesh has witnessed a substantial increase in its installed solar capacity due to favourable policy changes and initiatives launched by the state government. From 279 MW in 2017, installed solar capacity has grown to 2152 MW. Out of this current number, solar in the Bundelkhand region accounts for 60% of the capacity.

The state is all set to unveil Ayodhya as the state’s first solar city at the beginning of 2024. In November 2023, the state government also allocated 5900 acres of land for 19 solar and biogas projects.
