The South East Central Railway (SECR) is boosting its green energy efforts by installing solar power plants and constructing new buildings in line with Energy Conservation Building Code (ECBC) standards across its Bilaspur, Raipur, and Nagpur divisions.

The SECR has made significant progress in installing rooftop solar plants by utilizing available spaces on railway platforms, service buildings, maintenance sheds, and shops. Starting with a 5KW plant in 2010-11, SECR has now installed 5,451KW in rooftop solar capacity.

“These plants are generating 3.8 lakh units per month which results in a saving of Rs 10 lakh per month, amounting to a reduction of over 315 tonnes of CO2 footprints per month. The SECR has set up the biggest solar plant of Indian Railways at Bhilai, which has a capacity of 50MW. Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicated this plant in February 2024,” said SECR officials.

The solar energy is directly fed to the 220KV Powergrid substation at Kumhari and transmitted to North Eastern Railway (UP) and South Western Railway (Karnataka) for traction. This plant generates over 69 lakh units monthly, saving Rs 139 lakh and reducing CO2 emissions by 5,690 tonnes.

Additionally, the installation of 7.8MW solar plants, at an estimated cost of Rs 35 crore, is in the advanced sanction stage. The goal is to maximize every available space to generate solar energy.
