The Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC) has approved MSEDCL’s procurement of over 7,000 MW of solar power on a long-term basis at a competitive tariff of ₹2.82 to ₹3.10 per unit.
This initiative is part of the Mukhyamantri Saur Krushi Vahini Yojana 2.0 (MSKVY 2.0), aiming to solarize agricultural feeders by December 2025.
“The solar power procured from these projects will be eligible towards fulfillment of MSEDLC’s renewable purchase obligation,” the MERC order stated.
MSEDCL Managing Director Lokesh Chandra stated that Maharashtra is the first state to transition agriculture to solar, making this the world’s largest distributed renewable energy project for farmlands. With the latest 7,000 MW procurement, the state’s total solar procurement will reach 16,000 MW, including the previously approved 9,000 MW.
In its petition before MERC, MSEDCL officials said : “The state government seeks to provide daytime electricity to agriculture consumers through decentralised solar power projects. To achieve this objective, the Industries, energy and labour department in the state had notified Mukhyamantri Saur Krushi Vahini Yojana 2.0 (MSKVY 2.0), for faster procurement of distributed renewable energy for farm lands. The proposed procurement of energy through solar power will result in a reduction of overall cost of power procurement for MSEDCL. Such a reduction will, in turn, reduce burden of cross subsidy on industrial and commercial consumers.”
