The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has taken a major step to simplify the application process of grid-connected solar projects. In its latest notification update, MNRE directed DISCOMs to request fewer documents from consumers when they’re installing a solar plant.
Now, consumers applying for grid connected rooftop solar will only have to submit the following documents:

As part of the project completion report (PCR), consumer will only have to share the following:
- Solar panels: The make, capacity of each panel in watts and the total number of panels used with their serial numbers
- Solar inverter: Make, capacity and the serial number of the inverter
The ministry has instructed the power distribution companies to ensure that no other documents are requested from consumers during solar installation. Moreover, MNRE has also directed DISCOMs to keep sufficient stock of net meters/smart meters to avoid commissioning delays.
With this change, MNRE seeks to improve the adoption of rooftop solar in India. Recently, the ministry also announced a 23% increase in solar subsidy for residential consumers. These dual measures are poised to have a beneficial effect on the advancement of solar infrastructure in the country.
