The Captive Floating Solar Power Plant Built by SPIC in Tamil Nadu is Now Operational

On Monday (7th March 2022), the agri-nutrient and fertilisers company Southern Petrochemicals Industries Corporation Ltd, better known as SPIC Ltd, formally launched a captive floating solar power plant at Tuticorin.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Mr. M K Stalin officially opened the facility, which is said to be the country’s first and largest floating power plant.

AM International Holdings Ltd, Singapore, built a state-of-the-art 25.3 megawatts DC/22 megawatts AC floating solar power plant as part of its efforts to optimise energy production in industrial plants on a long-term basis.

SPIC Ltd is a subsidiary of Singapore-based AM International Holdings Ltd.

Floating solar installations, according to business executives, produce a better yield than standard land-based solar plants, increasing energy generation and preventing water from evaporating.

Greenam Energy, a wholly-owned subsidiary of AM International, owns the floating solar power plant. The floating islands and supply floats were designed, engineered, and anchored by SPIC Ltd in collaboration with Ceil and Terre, a global pioneer in floating solar power.

Construction was taken over by EDAC Engineering Ltd., a subsidiary of the AM International Group.

Mr. M K Stalin, the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, claimed that clean energy was urgently needed, and that the state now could create more than 15,500 MW of renewable energy.

The floating solar power plant proposal proposed by SPIC is a positive step toward enterprises in the state embracing sustainable energy. Innovations like this are important steps in achieving Tamil Nadu’s objective of becoming a renewable energy leader “he stated

Chairman of the SPIC, Ashwin Muthiah, stated,I express my gratitude to Chief Minister M K Stalin for launching the solar power plant project. SPIC is constantly aiming to lower its carbon impact by successfully harnessing green energies through creative projects.

When the high-profile group arrived, SPIC Whole-Time Director S R Ramakrishnan greeted Stalin and gave him a tour of the plant.

We’re proud to be in the forefront of India’s and Tamil Nadu’s clean energy initiatives. It exemplifies our ESG (environmental, social, and governance) commitment to renewable energy progress,” Muthiah stated.

According to the corporation, the entire project cost was Rs 150.4 crore, with a large chunk of that ascribed to the pandemic during the construction phase.

The cutting-edge initiative is a big step forward in the field of solar-generated energy production. It reaffirms our commitment to harnessing renewable energy to achieve a more sustainable future“, he explained.

Because water facilitates a cooling effect, the floating solar power plant would create more energy, resulting in a higher output. According to the firm, the initiative will help the environment by reducing water evaporation in the reservoir by 60%.
