Municipal Administration Minister K.N. Nehru commissioned the city’s first solar power plant at Panjapur, boosting Trichy’s green energy transition. Developed by the corporation at a cost of ₹50 crore, the plant is set to save ₹9 crore annually by supplying its power output to TANGEDCO’s grid.
Officials said that the Panjapur solar power plant, developed under the Smart Cities Mission, boasts a capacity of 9.6 MW. Spread across 33 acres near the Trichy-Madurai National Highway, the plant comprises four solar generation units, each with a capacity of 2.4 MW.
The Panjapur solar plant, equipped with 29,328 solar panels mounted on elevated concrete pillars, is designed to generate 159.7 lakh units of electricity annually, averaging 43,000 units per day. The power generated will be transmitted via high-tension cables to TANGEDCO’s substation in E. Pudur, located 4 km from the plant.
“Electricity produced by the plant will be adequate to compensate for the power consumption of eight drinking water collector wells and one sewage pumping station. Altogether, the plant could save Rs 9 crore per year in the electricity expense,” a senior official said.
The local body has contracted a private agency to operate and maintain the Panjapur solar plant for 10 years. It is the first solar project directly implemented by a municipal corporation in the state.
